So as the title of this post suggests, we're going to cover probably one of the most valuable skills of our time and that is how to get your website to the top of Google.

Step one: Keywords

OK, so first of all we need to find out what keywords we want to target. There's no point in being at the top of Google for the keyword "dog grooming" if you're a plumber.

Before we can begin with the whole how-to kick Google's ass article, we need to decide on a couple of things.

1) First of all we need our keyword.

2) Then we need to know how many people search for that term in a month.

3) Now we need to know our competition.

Keywords step one - finding our keyword.

Getting to the top of Google is very similar to winning an election. You first need the candidate (the website) and then you need the votes.

Voting on the internet is done using hyperlinks. A hyper link is an anchor text that contains a link to a specific website, blog, page or post i.e. How to build a wordpress blog from scratch.

The link above would be a vote for my wordpress workshops page on this site.

If someone searched "How to build a wordpress blog from scratch" they might come up with that page, depending on how many of those hyperlinks (with that specific anchor text) are on the internet compared to my competitors.

If I have the most, I win and am given the top place by Google.

That said, it is important that we understand the level of competition before we begin.

In this article I am going to use the keyword " hairdressers in Bristol " as the example (quite handy if you're a hairdresser in Bristol).

The first thing we need to do is head over to Google's AdWords keyword tool and generate a list of relevant keywords for our campaign (see below).

Keywords step two - Number of searches in a month

So as you can see, all you have to do is enter in your keywords and hit the "search button" this will bring up a list of relevant keywords for us to research but before we begin we need to ensure Google is set to "Phrase" match (see below).

Doing this means we'll get an accurate number of "hits" for that keyword in any given month.

Now we need to look at how many searches all of the keywords get and evaluate our chance of getting to the top of Google for each keyword.

The whole idea is to start with one and as time goes on dominate Google for all of the keywords using the techniques found in the rest of this article.

Keywords step three - The level of competition

Now for the fun part. before we can start talking about how we defeat Google, or rather our competition, we need to look at how much work we are going to have to do to get there and the free tool we are going to use to do this is called Traffic Travis.

Simply download their free software and install it onto your computer and then follow the following instructions.

Once you have installed the software, open it up and select the Analyze Keyword option (see below).

Now we need to input our desired keyword and as we established previously, we are going to be looking at the keyword "hairdressers in Bristol" so put that into the Phrase to Analyze box at the top of the screen (without the inverted commas).

In this example, I am only going to search sites from the UK (as Bristol is in the UK) and I'm only interested in achieving the #1 spot so I am going to search for the top 10. So fill in the form as shown below and hit the analyze button.

That will bring up a list of results for us to look at and the information found here is going to give us a good indication of how hard we are going to have to work to get our site to the top of Google.

It is really important that we understand the results on show if we are going to stand a chance of getting to the top of Google.

Rank: This is the rank in Google

Website: This is the website that currently holds that position in Google

PR: Stands for Page Rank and is something that Google awards websites that have been around for a while. The higher the PR, the harder it will be to knock that webpage off the top spot.

Google PR is a number between 1 and 10, 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest. Google.co.uk is only PR 8

BL: This is potentially the most valuable information we have to decide whether we are going to take this keyword on or not. It stands for back links and is a number of hyperlinks leading to that specific page.

BLS: This is the number of back links leading to the whole site and isn't to important when deciding on whether or not to take on the keyword.

TBL: This is the total number of back links coming in from .edu or .gov websites. .gov or .edu links usually carry a high weight in terms of back links as not all back links are equal.

DMOZ & YAHD: Are both directories so if the site has a tick in that box it means that it is listed in that directory.

The following results are what we call "on page" SEO and we'll be covering this a little later on in the post.

Title: This means that page has the keyword in the page title.

Desc: This means that page has the keyword in the page description.

H1 Tag: This means that page has the keyword in a H1 Tag on the page.

As a rule of thumb, the less Green ticks in the results, the easier it will be to compete for that keyword but the key result is the BL column which is an indication of how many hyperlinks you will need to get the top spot but we will talk more about creating hyperlinks later.

Step Two: Creating our site

Now that we have a good idea of what keywords we want to use and the level and strength of competition we can start creating our website.

In an ideal world you would have your keyword in your domain i.e. hairdressersibristol.co.uk

Now we need to build our site ensuring we have our keyword in our title, our description and in at least one H1 tag.

A really good tool is a tool called SEOpressor and it is a tool that gives you a % of how good your post or page looks to Google.

The higher the score given to you by SEOpressor, the more likely you are to get to the top of Google in fact it is literally impossible to get anything wrong if you're using a blog powered by SEOpressor.

Content for your site (bulking it up)

Another good trick is to build a site with a couple of pages on and title the pages according to Google's related keywords option.

This may not work well with the keywords hairdressers in bristol, but it does with the keyword hairdresser.

To get to the related keyword tool just click on the more search tools option in the sidebar of your search in Google.

And then on the Related Searches option in that menu.

Google will then add a related searches bar to the top of your search...

The next step would be to write keyword rich articles for at least 3 other keywords and add them to your site using SEOpressor to ensure the best results.

If you need any help building wordpress sites then please feel free to visit our WordPress Workshops section on this website where you can learn how to do it from start to finish.

Step Three: Getting to the top

Once your site is built it's a simple matter of creating the back links needed to dominate your competition.

There are loads of different methods of creating back links but the easiest is by outsourcing them.

The best place to look for back linking providers is on the <a href="http://warriorforum.com/ target="blank"">Warrior Forum. You're able to see live testimonials from their customers to see that they are legit and just by being a member you'll get a discount.

If you're looking for .edu or .gov back links you can get them from Smarter Submit.

All you've got to do is look at the BL figure we obtained from Traffic Travis and buy the right amount of back links to beat your competition.

In the case of "Hairdressers in Bristol" you would probably need about 1,500.

Remember that not all links are created equal. Links from High PR websites and .org .gov and .edu domains carry more weight.

Other than that that is it for the basics of dominating Google. I hope you have enjoyed reading this article and look forward to hearing some of your feedback.

Ever wanted to know how web hosting or more specifically, how the internet worked? Well this article is going to explain the whole process for you and answer the question; how does hosting work?

So How does Hosting Work & How Does it Fit into the Internet?

In order to run a website you need to have a couple of things. Firstly you will need a domain.

A domain is sort of like the number of your house. You might live at number 7 Juniper Drive but your website may be 7juniperdrive.com.

Your hosting is sort of like the land that your house is on. For instance you may have a 7 acre property with a gym and swimming pool, or you may live in a tower block in central london.

You can't have a website without hosting it's impossible and the amount you spend on your hosting, should be proportional to the amount of traffic you intend to send to it (or people you wish to invite round).

If you're running a small blog or website, there's no point in buying a high spec business hosting package. All you need is somewhere to keep your website files for people to access them easily.

So how does hosting work then?

So by looking at the picture above you should be able to see how hosting works. If you want your users browsers to find your website files stored in your hosting account you're going to need to change your nameservers.

This is done by logging into your domain provider i.e. UK2.net or GoDaddy.com and changing the name servers for your domain.

*If you don't know what the nameservers should be then contact your hosting providers support desk and ask what you should change your nameservers to i.e. ns1.hostingnameserver.com & ns2.hostingnameserver.com.

In essence the nameservers specify where the files for that site are located.

How Does Hosting Work? What Tool is There to control Your Account?

Most hosting accounts have a cPanel dashboard. cPanel is the central control dashboard for your hosting. When you set up your account you will register a domain with the account and from that domain you can create ftp accounts, email accounts, MySQL Databases, WordPress installations and many many more.

How does hosting work? Very simply, it is a bit of virtual space on a hosting providers server that allows you to store your website files. By changing your nameservers and pointing an externally registered domain to your hosting account, you're able to host your own content onto a domain that you may own.

Here at EnterTheNet.co.uk we have a very powerful hosting option for beginners in the Hosting world, as well as step-by-step how to tutorials on Website building.

Blogs are a really cool way of getting your message out into a greater sphere. They're a way of conveying your personality through the content you post to them. This post is going to teach you how to build a blog or website for your band, and how you can do it without breaking the bank.

having a blog is a way of connecting with a greater audience, thus creating more awareness of your band. Blogs allow your music to spread virally and organically with use of, syndication and word of mouth and most of the applications and plugins that you use with them are free.

Making a blog is really simple. Here's a quick how to on building a blog. When you've finished reading this, make sure you check out our free WordPress training videos (link opens in NEW window).

Step 1: Think of a name.

Thinking of a name for your website is logically the first thing you would do. If your bands name is a common term then you might find that it's already taken.

If this is the case don't worry...

Just get a little creative with what you would like to call it. You may even find that you can get a .net or .org or something like that.

Step 2: Build your site.

The easiest way to build a site is by using a free content management system called WordPress. You've probably heard of it and that's because it's so popular and effective at helping people spread the word.

We make business / band blogs for our clients and can help people get started online. We also teach people how to do it themselves for free.

Step 3: Coming up with content.

Coming up with content is simple. All you've got to do is post content that people can connect with and do it often and there are many different mediums and platforms available.

For example You could host your music on SoundCloud and embed that code into your site.

Or you could record a video of a practice session or gig and upload that to YouTube or Vimeo.

You could then categorise all of your blog posts and add tags so that people can see all your photos, see all your videos and hear all your songs.

If your band already has a good following, your blog could become a place for your fans to communicate with each other.

There are also many tools out there that can help you to improve readability of your blog. For example you could choose to use the OptinApp.co.uk plugin that allows you to build an email list with Facebook using your blog.

Building an email list is a really good way to develop relationships with people. You update your blog and write a generic email informing your fans that you have updated your blog with fresh content. Your email marketing software then personalises that email for each one of your fans (filling in their first name).

If you want to build your own blog or website for your band then make sure you check out our free WordPress training videos.

The whole point of creating a Facebook Page for your business is to build a fan base of people interested in your product or service, right?

Facebook Pages are a great tool for interacting with your fans on a regular basis and for them to discover whether or not your product or service is right for them.

But to build a HUGE fan base you need people clicking the all mighty "LIKE" button. Yep, the tiny little button sitting at the top of your page.

Gone are the days of "Become a fan." Today, it's all about the "LIKES" and YOU WANT THEM (a lot of them!)

Because without them... you have ZERO reach. If you have zero reach, you have ZERO to bank.

And this is where most Page Admins fall flat on their face.

Let me explain...

Have you ever visited a Facebook Page for a business, only to land on their "Wall" where you see the comments and status updates?

If so, did it make you want to "LIKE" the page?

Probably not.

Allowing your visitors to land on your "Wall" is the #1 mistake Page Admins are making all across Facebook.

But it doesn't have to be this way...

Because as a Page Admin, you have the ability to create a custom landing page AND set this page as your "Default Landing Tab" for your Page.

You'll first need to install an iFrame application into your page (which is beyond the scope of this post unfortunately click here for more info.) This will allow you to create a custom tab on your Page.

Once you have your custom tab, you will want to create some type of "offer" along with a "call to action" to entice people to "LIKE" your page.

An example offer would be something like this:

Take a look at one of our clients pages

It's proven that you will get more "Likes" just by making this one small change to your Facebook Page.

I want one!!

We build high quality fan pages that people actually "like" and we work with business owners in gaining more business through Facebook. Click here to read about our Facebook Marketing Package.

It's a well known fact that mobile marketing is a very good way to improve the relationships that you develop with your clients. Text messages have a much higher open rate than email messages and people these days are really sceptical of internet marketing methods.

Why not then consider in investing in mobile marketing.

The types of businesses who would benefit from these types of services are restaurants, deli's, coffee shops and many of the other high street stores that rely on continuous trade to keep themselves afloat.

EnterTheNet.co.uk is on the verge of introducing Mobile marketing as one of their services. Your business may benefit from your clients monthly, personal updates.

When we say personal updates, what we mean is; you collect your customers names and mobile numbers and we send a message out for you i.e. Hi (clients first name), hope you're well! We thought we'd just let you know that we have a special on every Tuesday of this month so if you want to save money drop in to say hi.

We then send out a message once every month to help you bring in that all important repeat business.

I'm really excited about this new development and when the service is ready we will let you know.
